Gut Reactions: Villa Controversially Beaten by Man City

  • Villa robbed by a terrible refereeing/VAR decision. Welcome back.
  • I find it really hard to blame Mings for bringing the ball down when in theory the bloke who’s 30 yards offside shouldn’t be allowed to tackle him. Most people still blaming Mings are the ones who already dislike him.
  • Villa defended absolutely brilliantly all game and deserved to get something. Mings and Targett in particular were excellent.
  • Matt Targett was Man of the Match for me.
  • Cash just about managed to contain Foden, no easy task.
  • Was good to see Villa be brave when they won the ball back. They created some good chances on counter-attacks.
  • Villa’s defensive tactic of letting City have the ball in the wide areas and clogging the penalty area, forced Man City to try eye-of-the-needle passes and limited clear-cut chances. Especially as City didn’t have a recognised striker on the pitch for most of the game.
  • I think Trezeguet would have played if he wasn’t (presumably) still recovering from COVID. Traore tries but doesn’t really know what he’s doing defensively. However, him flicking the ball over Kevin De Bruyne was amazing.
  • You could see some rust at times from Villa through loose touches and passes.
  • Villa rode their luck at times, but you can’t expect to stop Man City creating opportunites.
  • McGinn had a poor game, punctuated by him turning Villa’s best chance of the game into an air-shot.
  • Hopefully Targett’s injury is nothing serious. Villa badly need to sign another left-back, I can’t deal with Taylor.
  • Performing that well away at Man City after not playing for almost three weeks deserves huge credit. I love this team.
  • I think Dean Smith got his money’s worth on his red card. He let John Moss have it, and it was amazing.
  • Let’s demolish Newcastle at the weekend and put this night behind us.
  • UTV.
