Gut Reactions: Villa Edged Out at Old Trafford

  • A massively frustrating defeat, but a show of how far Villa have come.
  • Villa settled into the game and grew in confidence after having to weather the storm early on.
  • The Martial goal was so unlucky for Mings, who had started the game really well and couldn’t have done much more in defending the cross.
  • The game was finely balanced in the first half and you could tell the first goal was going to be important. Both teams looked dangerous on the counter.
  • McGinn’s volleyed pass to Traore in the second half was a sight to behold.
  • Grealish put a couple of gorgeous crosses in to Watkins.
  • Seriously, what does Watkins have to do to score? An unreal save from De Gea was the only thing stopping him this game.
  • Very unusual for Wan-Bissaka to switch off defensively and Villa took full advantage for the goal.
  • The ball in from Grealish was inviting again and Traore showed great composure to finish it.
  • Such a shame that Douglas Luiz gave away a cheap penalty, because he was brilliant otherwise.
  • Smith will be frustrated that United didn’t have to work too hard for their goals. The defence in general was excellent but were made to pay for two errors.
  • Credit to United, they forced Villa to give the ball away in their own half regularly.
  • A bit of luck and some terrific Martinez saves allowed Villa to stay in the game right til the end.
  • This Villa team isn’t going away. They’ll only get better and will be a tough out for every team they face.
