Gut Reactions: Villa Pummel Palace on Boxing Day

  • That was a truly impressive performance from Villa.
  • Martinez’s save from Zaha at 0-0 was a big moment. He showed again today why Villa paid £20m for him.
  • Still no goal for Watkins (somehow) but 3 assists and a Man of the Match display, he made it feel like Villa still had 11 players in the second half with his tireless work.
  • Anwar El Ghazi is brimming with confidence. His goal was unsaveable.
  • Palace looked dangerous in possession in the first half through the trickery of Zaha and Eze, but Konsa’s introduction seemed to help nullify their threat.
  • Mings’ first yellow was completely unwarranted and Zaha fouled him before he received his second.
  • It was a shame for Traore to be substituted, he’s improving with each passing game and was unlucky not to have two goals today.
  • I was completely shocked to see the referee and VAR come to a sensible decision after reviewing Cash’s challenge on Van Aanholt; no penalty was the correct decision.
  • Good for Kortney Hause. He’s been rock solid since coming into the lineup and his reaction to scoring was a great moment.
  • Matt Targett was absolutely terrific.
  • Villa’s pro-active approach to the second half with 10 men was so impressive; the lead never really felt in peril.
  • McGinn and Luiz were rock solid in the second half. McGinn in particular had a very good game.
  • Konsa’s ability and comfortability on the ball are not normal for a CB.
  • Konsa and Cash could easily play for England by the end of the season.
  • Grealish ran rings around Palace on the counter-attack.
  • There’s still Ross Barkley to add to the mix.
  • This team is going places. There’s not another side in the league that they can’t beat.
  • Bring on Chelsea.
