- That was a weird, weird game.
- Some Villa fans seemed to think this would be an easy bounce-back game after the loss to Leeds and I have no idea why. Southampton beat us well at home and away last season.
- James Ward-Prowse is good at free-kicks.
- Why is John McGinn marking Jannik Vestergaard ever?
- Villa weren’t that bad from open play in the first half and yet were 3-0 down at half-time.
- Watkins unsurprisingly found it difficult to hold the ball up against Vestergaard and co. Having any success with set pieces was also a struggle for the same reason.
- Mings’ passing was sloppy throughout and kept putting the defence under pressure.
- Whereas Martinez couldn’t have done anything to stop Southampton’s four goals, McCarthy made some excellent saves to prevent Villa getting back into the game sooner.
- After a quiet first half, Grealish turned it on after half-time. Involved in all three Villa goals.
- After being 4-0 down, Villa leaving me annoyed that they didn’t end up getting a point is the most Villa thing ever.
- Villa beat Southampton 2.67-0.80 on expected goals and that’s insane.
- Love the character shown in the second half. Hopefully Villa can take that positivity into another tough game against Arsenal next week.
